i gotta say i don't mind the word panties. though i usually call them that when i'm tired and cranky and my phila accent creeps out (ok, it's always there) and i say it something that resembles "peonies". or "pannies." but with that flat A. know'mean?
i much prefer the term underpants, which a lot of people find scary.
