I went to Carrows last night with my friend to play scrabble and eat desserts. The waiter who looked to be about 50, but sounded like he had been smoking since 1921 greeted us as Kids and showed great interest in our Scrabble game. I have fun playing scrabble, I play once in a while and enjoy it every time. I am not very good, I forget about triple word score boxes, I miss letters, I make up words without realizing it. But, it's not like either my friend or I is very competitive. Anyway. The waiter showed great interest in the game. "Ohhh Scrabble. You know up the street every day they have a Scrabble tournament. What do you guys average?" I have no idea what I average. So, I just made up a number. "Oh man. I can coach you guys I average about 400 a game." I was pretty impressed with that, and I figured his offer to coach was a cute joke that he thought would earn him a huge tip. Nope. He came by all the time to watch the game and give us tips. At first, I was intimidated. I mean 400 points! That's impressive!

Then, I started actually listening to his tips.

crys "That's worth 50 points!"
xe "It's Hebrew."
doa_s "Doses! That's a big point getter!"
"You guys are really messing up. Always protect the triple scores. I average 400 when I play."

Well, I think it is pretty easy to average 400 when you are making up words.

Still. Scrabble is fun, even with a big knowitall telling you what to do.

No specific weekend plans. I think I do want to get back in the habit of my menu. I took a couple of weeks off to save money, but next week I will get back into cooking interesting things.
Oh man. I forget if I said this here. But, Dump Cake? HUGE success. So delicious. So VERY VERY delicious. Everyone should go out tomorrow and make it. Just Do Not Stir and everything will be A-Ok.

I had a fun Valentine's Day. I guess it was sort of UnValentine's since there was no smooching, or romance involved, but it was still fun. My friend came over and we made Fondue. I have never made it before, and it is really easy to make. But, it takes up a ton of cheese. So much cheese you wouldn't believe. Also, lots of wine. I kind of made up the recipe based on about ten things I saw online. My cheese fondue had cheese in it (duh) lots of white wine, butter, salt, nutmeg, lemon, garlic, and I don't remember what else.
Did you know fondue means melted in French? Which is very appropriate. Since the cheese was quite melty. Liquidy, even. Yum.

We also watched the last few episodes of Season 1 of the Office, and a couple of episodes from Season 3. I have seen them all before, but I love watching them again with someone new to see their reaction. There will be a new episode on tonight. It will be good, I am sure.

Apparently the east coast is covered in like 50 billion tons of snow. Ha ha ha ha. Yay! This is much better than January when we were getting hail and my parents were telling me how awesome the weather was and how they were fishing and wearing short sleeved shirts.
Hail is for the birds. Atleast snow is very useful. You can make a snowman. Or throw a snowball. Or make a snowangel. Or do many things that start with the word snow.

Who do you think would win in a fight an adorable bunny, or a scary monster from space? I think probably the scary monster, but bunnies can hop. So, I am not totally sure.

My friend took me to Blue Agave for my birthday which was really awesome. I had no idea where I wanted to go, just that I wanted to try out something that I have never had before. As we were walking around downtown I realized it was there, and really wanted to go there, because I had heard great things. The original spot was Chase Bar and Grill, but I am glad we went with the Blue Agave instead. They have an excellent menu with lots of interesting foods, and better than that the ambiance was awesome. We sat upstairs in a booth. I got to sit in the booth section, which had an incredibly comfortable cushioned seat and two pillows for me to flop on. My friend sat across from me in what she called "A chair that is perfect for short people." While we ate great music played, it started with Leonard Cohen and ended with Madeleine Peyroux. The food was delicious. I had fish stew, and there was all sorts of fish and shrimp in some sort of tomato sauce. I also had a pomegranate martini which was ever so delicious (and girl drinky.) I give Blue Agave all sorts of thumb ups. It was great to go and hang out, and really, the next time I have a girlfriend this will be a great place to go, because two people can fit on the comfy couches very easily.

I have been going through my bookshelf and decided to stop going to the library and just read what I have had on my shelves for months. So, in a couple of weeks I will probably have a bunch more books to give away. Right now I am reading the Manchurian Candidate. Which, is really quite good. It's hard not to think about the movie, but, watching the movie first makes comparisons less likely to be negative.

I wrote to my aunt a couple of weeks ago telling her how I remembered and loved different desserts she made when I was a kid. She wrote back telling me that one of the desserts I remembered she never made and that I was near insane, but included recipe cards for other great things. One is called Dump Cake, which sounds really good and easy and I can't wait to make it. And, my favorite part about it is that the recipe has parts that are underlined and capitalized. It's like Darth Vader is telling me how to make dump cake. DO NOT STIR. Also, with these recipe cards I have realized that they are the best way to cook having a little index card to look at is far more satisfying than looking at a cook book, or at a web page. Just one little card you can carry around with you. I made chocolate chip cookie bars this weekend from the card, and they turned out delicious. And, really now I know the secret to making cookies, or cookie bars easier - melt the butter in the microwave for about 15 seconds, that makes everything so much easier.

This week I made Minestrone Soup. I got the recipe from the Moose cooking book that I found in my kitchen. It's a pretty fun book, it's also were I got the recipe for Eggplant Parmesan that I made with my friend at some point last week. This time I was on my own for cooking, but that was ok. If I hadn't been, I wouldn't have realized how much a garlic press would come in handy. SO, the next time I am at the store I will pick one up. Anyway, this recipe was pretty tough. The only difficult thing was having the patience to wait for the garbanzo beans to finish soaking in the water. Everything else was pretty easy. You had to cook the garlic and the onion together for a while to smell up the kitchen. (I cheated and opened the window. But, I still cried while cutting the onions. You would think it had something to do with the onion gases, but I was thinking of lost loves and that episode of the Love Boat were Captain Steubing had to sell his daughter to pirates.) Then you added lots of other things like salt and pepper and tomato puree (Which I didn't know was different than tomato paste until the last minute, so I had to improvise) and the cooked beans with all of it's beany water. Then you let that cook for a while, and added zucchini (which I like to call Zukes) and chopped up green peppers. THEN you let it cook for a while more and add tomatoes. And then when it was close to done you turn up to a massive boil and add noodles. Also, somewhere in there you add basil and red wine. It's too bad I have a lot of basil and red wine left over. I think both of those things go bad. Oh also celery was in there somewhere.

Well, the broth tasted excellent and all of the vegetables were excellent as well. But, I hated the beans. Hated them a lot. Next time I think I will add extra something else and skip the beans, because I did not enjoy them. In fact, as I was putting the soup into the tub to put in the refrigerator (Which I like to call the Fridge) I took each and every bean out and threw it into the trash can so I would never be bothered by them again. Even with the sadness of beans I think it was really good soup. And perfect for how cold it was here.

And here is what it looked like:

OH. The bread was fantastic. It was from the vegetable place over on Milpas, well they sold it. But, it was actually from Our Daily Bread. I had thought about going over there to pick up bread, but my day was getting long and I figured I would just use Trader Joe's Bread. But, I didn't have to because I found this stuff. So delicious!

Minestrone soup

Also. I thought parsley was a garnish. But, the recipe told me to put some of it on there. And I did. But, ew. Never again. It tasted like eating grass in the bad not a good salad way. Maybe my moose friend meant it as a garnish as well? Well, they should have made that clear.

The paella turned out pretty good this weekend. It wasn't perfect, and I made some mistakes that I think I will be able to correct next time. But, in spite of all that it still was pretty tasty stuff. Plus, it was an adventure to go find all of the ingredients. I found out that there is a fish market at the harbor that sells fish that is caught that day. Can't beat that, at all. I got scallops, and mahi, and mussels, and shrimp and clams for the paella. The clams didn't really work at all, but everything else was terrific. Everyone who came over for the paella enjoyed it, so even with the mistakes (like adding the sofrito too late, using too small of a pan, using clams, not putting in enough salt) I think it was a success because everyone enjoyed the food and even had seconds.

Next time I am going to try to make the chicken version. Or, just throw some stuff together for it. Just to get some practice.

Here is a picture of how it came out. Kind of gross and messy, I know. But, still. It tasted better than it looks.
messy paella

This week's food experiments are not going to be as challenging as paella. I am going to make minestrone soup, and eggplant parmesan. I haven't read the eggplant recipe, but I think I will use Duck Eggs, and Aloe plants to make it extra healthy.
