pricciar: (Superman!)
I went to see Superman Returns tonight at the Arlington Theater. I bought my tickets early, since I was riding by there anyhow. The guy in front of me bought 8 tickets! I imagine they were for 8 people and he wasn't planning on sitting by himself. But, who knows? I don't. And, I asked him. He just hummed the theme to superman and walked away. I don't actually know what he was humming, but I would say that is a good guess. Or maybe the theme from Bonanza. Which is very catchy and makes me think of Little Joe. The littlest Cartwright. I have been pretty excited about seeing the film ever since I saw the preview for it before Harry Potter. But, the date totally snuck up on me, and then they even moved up the date when you could see the movie. So, I was really happy to find out I could watch it tonight and at 10 PM not that mean spirited midnight they usually foist on us. I got to the theater at 9:30 and there was a small line waiting to get in. As I was waiting Dennis Miller came up to me and said "Sir, is this the line for people who have tickets?" And, I said yes. And he told his three young companions "Ok. I am going to go to the box office and pick up the ducats" Now, why did he call a ticket a ducat? I am not sure. Was he trying to impress his teenage son? Well, it didn't work the kid said whatever under his breath. Now. I haven't thought Dennis Miller was especially funny since the 1990s. But, I have to say I respect a comedian who calls me sir. Anyway. The theater really was not that crowded. And, I had primo seats right in the middle. Some, weird conversations going on all around me This big guy to his son. "Ok. Sitting on the ends we don't have to worry about it if we need to get up during the middle of the movie. You know it's a long movie." "Whatever. I am going to stay right here. have fun on the corner." "No. I mean, you have to come with me." "Well. That's not going to happen." I don't know if the guy used threats or promises, but they did end up moving. And, were replaced by people who liked to hoot and holler as if they were at a hoe down. Well. They were not at a hoedown, and I guess they realized this eventually. Dennis Miller did not seem amused when I looked back during the hooting.

There was some good previews. Including the preview for Spiderman 3 which I cannot wait to see because it is going to be so awesome. Venom! Yay! Also, one for a movie with Mark Wahlberg trying to get on the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976. That actually looks like it might be fun. It's neat to see actors portraying people I grew up watching, like Greg Kinnear playing Dick Vermeil. Although, I am sure I will be aghast at all the liberties they take with locations and the look of newscasts. The other previews didn't look as interesting as those two.

The movie itself was terrific. I really have no complaints at all. It went by so quickly and I enjoyed every minute. i will say this. The guy who played Superman and Clark Kent, was not Christopher Reeve. If you thought he would be you are really kind of dumb, because he has been dead for a number of years. He was not George Reeves, or Kirk Alyn, either. Let's get with the program we are not living in the 1800s any longer. But, really, his Clark Kent was bumbling, but not quiet as funny as Reeve's. Still great. I was really surprised by a couple of things, and had a bunch of big laughs. And, I did like all of the references to the original Reeve Superman movie. Also, Parker Posey? Awesome. Speaking of former actors. I am almost positive the old woman who we see at the start of the movie was the same lady who played Lois Lane in the 1950s tv show. And, that kind of amazes me that she was in it. I mean, I know she played an old lady, but she must be almost a million years old. I enjoyed the story. Kevin Spacey played a great Luthor. Just EVVVVVIl. No poems, which is one improvement over the 1970s Superman. Great fun all around.

I just looked it up. It was the 50s Lois, Noel Neill. Well, that is really cool. That was a huge cameo for a woman who is 85 years old. I love stuff like that. Bryan Singer wins.

Anyway. I thought this was fantastic and everyone should go see it.
